A Forgotten Chapter in American History

Step back in time with retired reading specialist Lori Vicker as she explores the fascinating and often overlooked history of the Orphan Train Movement (1854–1929).

Lori’s interest in this topic began while teaching Children’s and Adolescent Literature at Viterbo University, where she met Mary McClain, a descendant of an Orphan Train rider. Mary shared her mother’s experience with Lori, sparking her continued interest in researching and sharing these important stories.

During this presentation, Lori will share historical information, stories, vintage children’s clothing, and artifacts related to the children who traveled westward. She has also made frequent visits to the National Orphan Train Museum in Concordia, Kansas, where she has gathered books and historical materials.

Attendees will receive a bibliography featuring popular nonfiction and historical fiction for further reading, and time will be provided for questions and discussion.
