Music can be sorted into thousands of genres, but what makes each style unique?

Join Tanager and Hiawatha Public Library as we explore four major musical genres and their key expressive elements, pairing each concept with an Expressive Arts project.

Wednesday, April 29 , 2026 Time: 4:00PM - 5:00PM POP: The Artist’s Iceberg

Catchy beats, pleasant vocals, and relatability are the name of the game in the pop
music scene, but is there more to this genre than meets the eye? Unpack themes of
identity and outside perception in this workshop.

Wednesday, May 6 , 2026 Time: 4:00PM - 5:00PM JAZZ: Unconventional Self-Portraits

Since its emergence, jazz music has celebrated creative freedom and expression. In
this workshop, we will explore how jazz musicians make intentional, spontaneous
artistic choices, with or without words!

Wednesday, June 3 , 2026 Time: 4:00PM - 5:00PM VIDEO GAME MUSIC (VGM) & FILM SCORING: Stories in Sound

Days deep into a story-based game, you are about to enter the final boss’ lair.
Imagine that the music cuts out right as the battle starts– and does not resume.
What a bore! In this workshop, we will explore the art of the “soundtrack” and its
ability to transport listeners to a different world.

Wednesday, July 1 , 2026 Time: 4:00PM - 5:00PM HIP HOP & RAP: Can You Hear Me?

Being in the audience of a hip hop or rap performance can feel electric; the quick,
rhythmic wordplay requires listeners to truly hear the greater message of an artist,
leaving a lasting impact. As creatives, we will explore how our art may invite our
communities to hear and see us.
